The moon is a harsh mistress

I decided to chose the song "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress" as my ideas for this song was to include the myths of the Jade Rabbit that lives on the moon with the mistress (quite similar to Chang'e who lives on the moon with the company of the Jade Rabbit).

For more research I looked up some designs for book covers, rabbits and anything that I felt would be useful for getting down some ideas and inspiration as well as some colour pallet choices which would mainly consists of blues and yellows.

I was really excited to shove all the ideas I had down - I wasn't thinking of  how my pages would be laid out at this point but I'm pretty happy with the ideas I came up with.
Research
Henry Baker
For more research I looked into the work of Henry Baker as the colours and the vibrancy pulled me into looking at more of his work. I really liked the way he uses gouache with watercolours as particles fade away, giving the images more to look at.
Layout + Developments
Picture
I tested layout pages digitally, and at first I was wanting to have a double page spread but I found it hard to work with so I opted out for now and thought it would still look nice being separate pages.
I did a few developments with which thumbnails I wanted and which front and back cover I thought would work best.

Media Tests
I decided to test out some mediums although I already knew I was wanting to work digitally this still helped with how vibrant I wanted the colours and overall I really like the colours the gouache gives off.
Digital Mock-ups
For my mock ups I decided to focus more on the text and see where I wanted it to be laid out compared to my development. I moved onto working digitally and try to incorporate the vibrancy of the gouache's but with flat base colours just to visually see my what my pages will look like.

Finals
Throughout my process I changed up some details such as how the Mistress would look and if my pages would be continuing onto the next but I had some difficulty in trying to get the quality of the drawings to present so I left it as each page getting it's own illustration. Overall I enjoyed this project as the whole concept of moon and space as well as incorporating mythology is something I am interested in.

Work over the break

To take what I learned form my feedback I flipped the first image to make sure the composition lead the eye to the next page and with the seconds image i added more to the background with the pine trees as to not make it look like it lacks compared to the other pieces.

This has overall been my favourite project so far and I loved the concept I thought of when It came to the song.

I couldn't go back and add my fixed designs as I stopped my subscription for now.
