Editorial illustration

Basics of Editorial Illustration
To begin my research I looked into how editorial illustration is created and the process, the information I included are the parts I have found the most useful and links to where i found them. I've also included some videos that help visualise the process, most of these illustrations only take one day to complete fully, and for this project we have a week to finish one article each giving us more time to focus on the visuals and what we want to discuss with the viewers.

Article 1: Warning AI industry could use as much energy as the Netherlands

The Article
The basis of my article talked about how AI was consuming a lot of water energy from the environment. The amounts of energy taken from the environment is around the same size as the Netherlands. With all the buzz about AI, it's easy to forget that it's a bit of an energy hog. When AI models are being trained, they gobble up a ton of electricity, and the data center's they live in have massive appetites for power. Using AI in everyday stuff like voice assistants and recommendation systems also adds to the energy bill. But no worries, folks are working on it. They're making AI run more efficiently, finding green ways to power the machines, and trying to be less of a burden on the planet.

Key Words: Netherlands, Robots, Water, Energy, Nature, Environment good and bad effects
An understanding to AI
AI, or Artificial Intelligence, is a branch of computer science focused on creating systems that can perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence. These tasks include learning from data (machine learning), understanding language, analyzing images (computer vision), and making decisions. AI can be narrow (task-specific, like virtual assistants) or general (human-like intelligence). It has applications in various fields and has the potential to automate tasks and improve decision-making.

Robot and Human hands
When reading the article my first thought was about robots, and the potential of them harmonising with humans.
The Netherlands
The article mentioned the Netherlands briefly on the fact that AI uses the amount of water they have. I'm looking into ways I can perhaps include the Netherlands into my work and how I can incorporate AI energy being used.

What do I want to show in my Illustration? I want to focus on the part of the Article that briefly mentions the Netherlands. "You would be talking about the size of a country like the Netherlands in terms of electricity consumption. You're talking about half a per cent of our total global electricity consumption," I want to focus on the environmental aspects and how AI is affecting the earth.

Process
During my process I realised I wasn't sure if my work was supposed to be portrait or landscape as my brief did not mention anything specific on this. My idea was to have the image be portrait but after some consideration I felt landscape was going to work better. I feel like the colours are too warm which is how my usual illustrations tend to go, but to show the effect AI has on the environment I want to give a more 'dull' or 'gloomy' atmosphere.

Batteries
After a lecture i was told batteries could be a way to show off energy and how it can be used to incorporate into an illustration.
Robots
As I want my AI to have some sort of face i thought about robots and how any robot can be AI
Brains
Another thought i had was to make AI a brain instead as AI uses data it collects and stores information from what the developer gives it

Colour Palette
Fonts
I want the colours for this editorial to be bright and bold, I've picked up some palette's I thought would fit with my sketch and will possibly combine some palette's together. I then looked at some fonts for the background as I wasn't sure what I want the background to have.

Development
At first I was gonna choose the laptop route with the wires going everywhere but I felt like it was missing something and overall I wasn't happy with it. I then chose my next option which was a Robot drinking batteries.

Article 2: Patients have better outcomes with female surgeons, studies find

The Article
Female surgeons are often perceived as more empathetic and better communicators. Effective communication can improve patient satisfaction and understanding of their condition, treatment options, and recovery plans. While there's no definitive evidence, some research has suggested that female surgeons may have lower rates of surgical complications and medical errors. This could be due to their attention to detail and careful approach to surgery.

Key Words: Female surgeons, Caring / Patience, Not much follow up care compared to Male surgeons, Canada and Sweden medical records, Mount Sinai hospital (Canada), Better results working slow, Shorter hospital stays, Praise, Acceptance

Surgeons
As the article is all about surgeons I looked into some illustrations and also what surgeons typically wear during their operations as I don't want to accidently compare them to doctors
Time
My first thought was about time, as the article mentioned female surgeons taking their time to care for their patients

What do I want to show in my Illustration? There was a few keywords I thought about when I read the article, however, thinking about what to show and how to show this was a bit difficult. I quite liked the Idea of showing how  a female nurse cares and how they work slow to ensure their not making mistakes.

Process
Overall I chose to figure out how to show 'time' and how to work more 'slowly' by incorporating clocks. I thought about the animation for this illustration rather than the illustration itself, I wanted to show the clocks moving slowly around the nurse. I'm not too sure if this fits well with the article or if i'm missing something but once It's animated i'm hoping it all comes together.

Re-thinking my idea:
After a talk with Tony, I was made aware that the time idea felt like it was more 'rushing' the surgeons. I did not factor this in when I thought about the idea as I was wanting to show the time moving slow, but as a still imagine i can see why it would say otherwise. I also need to work on showing the female surgeon as more of a surgeon. Below I'm looking at praise and caring which I also had some original ideas for.
Praise
Finding images related to praise was a bit harder as most of them showed praying instead. But some of my ideas also led me to think about how patients would praise female surgeons for the work they provided.
Caring
The article mentions that female surgeons tend to be more caring towards their patients and they regularly check up on them

Article 3: The hunt for a new way to tackle clothing waste

Article
FastrThe fashion industry is undergoing a transformative journey in the hunt for more sustainable and eco-friendly practices to combat clothing waste. From embracing sustainable materials and circular fashion models to encouraging clothing rental and sharing, the push for slow fashion and promoting thrift shopping, various innovative solutions are reshaping the industry. As consumers become more informed and engaged, brands, designers, and policymakers are working together to reduce the environmental footprint of the fashion world, promoting a more responsible and ethical approach to clothing production and consumption.

Key Words: Landfills, Falls into the ocean, Fast fashion, Sweetcorn/Corn, Biocompatible

Biodegradable clothing: a way to reduce the polluting effects of fashion
How to stop clothing waste
1. Buy less and keep clothes longer - The most sustainable garment is the one that’s already in your closet — so resist buying clothes you won’t wear often and take care of your wardrobe to make it last longer.

2. Buy second-hand
- Instead of buying new clothes, save some clothing from a landfill by buying secondhand. Giving clothes a second life contributes to a less wasteful economy. Plus, many thrift, resale and vintage shops today sell clothes that look brand-new for cheaper prices.

3. Invest in sustainable brands if you can
- When you do buy new clothes, try to buy clothing made from sustainable materials that will last for years. Fast fashion brands use low-quality materials that are bad for the planet and fall apart quickly, which creates more waste. If you’re able to spend the extra money, buy from a sustainable brand.

4. Stay away from big oil’s fabrics
-  Many fast fashion fabrics are actually made from fossil fuels. As much as you can, try not to buy new garments that contain synthetic fabrics like nylon, polyester, acrylic and spandex. These fabrics contribute to big oil’s pocketbooks, and they aren’t made to last.

5. Repurpose old clothes - After going through your closet, sell or donate wearable clothes instead of throwing them away. And instead of tossing tattered garments, get creative. Some sewing skills can turn t-shirts into rags, masks or headbands. Old sweaters can be repurposed to create blankets or socks.

Landfills
The most obvious thought when reading the article was to look up some landfills, see how huge and messy all the thrown out clothes can look like, some even falling into the water due to how much there is.
Environmental
The article mentions about how we can make clothes more biodegradable.
Compactor
Most landfills are moved with compactors so I thought about including it within my illustration. I don't really draw Machine's so this would be a challenge to get accurate.
