Gig Poster

Sandra Brierly's Risk Assessment

For this brief we are asked to create a poster that is digitally done but made to look traditional and used. When I think of 'risk' I imagine a person doing something they never would have dared to before, perhaps they ventured into a different area filled with possible dangers and when I think of 'Assessment' my mind goes straight towards essays, papers, exams, graphs, etc... which overall seems a bit boring to be part of a band so for the background of Sandra Brierly's Risk Assessment I imagine this woman who's empowering and isn't afraid to charge so I will be looking into how I can portray this. Another idea I kept going back to was a detective, I like the idea of Sandra Brierly being some detective who gets herself into dangerous situations - for the overall band I see it being pop punk/emo or indie.

Artist Research:
Saul Bass
Saul Bass is another artist I have head about and I do like the way his posters are minimalistic but very carefully thought out within text and imagery. I also liked how bold his use of reds are as most of his posters consist or red, black and white primarily.
Alphonse Mucha
I remember Mucha's work from when I did Art History and his work is honestly so eye-catching, it isn't something I'd be able to do especially on photoshop but the overall vibe and style is very lovely.
Olly Moss
Olly Moss has some great designs and I am always seeing myself constantly using him with any digital reference - I like the overall vectors with detailed strokes in the more prominent areas - I also love the way he uses colours and how vibrant they are.
Book Research:
After the session with Tony I went to the library to find some book related research on posters - however it was a bit difficult to find certain posters that could inspire me for my work so I will be moving onto finding online research instead.
Video Research:
Poster/ Theme Inspo:
I looked on Pinterest to find some different gig posters filled with a variety of different compositions, fonts, colours and just overall pick the ones that really stood out to me. I am still struggling to process any Ideas for this project so within my title of the band I am going to focus on the word "risk" and see what information I can find and how I would create this poster. I had also talked with a few classmates on what they're doing and how they've thought of their ideas which has helped me try and see from a different view on what I can do - Overall I will be stepping out of my comfort zone again for this project especially when it comes to working with Photoshop. The images I have gathered have different themes within them that I could envision my work to relate with - some being within different themes as I was still figuring out what style I wanted my band to come off as.

Development:

I chose 4 thumbnails to develop further into but I seem to have focused more on the design than really using photoshop and it's tools. For my Actual photoshop designs I plan to create some textures to create a traditional affect and focus primarily on using Photoshop and it's tools.

Thursday Session:
On Thursday's session we where shown some useful ways of using photoshop and how we can use it more quickly, I found this to be really helpful as this project felt slow. I really liked some of the designs shown from working this way and I think it will help just create that traditional style as well as learn Photoshop's tools as well.

Experimental Marks:
After the session I decided to use Acrylic, Watercolour and Ink to create some random markings that I could incorporate and tested them out individually. I like the watercolor for more softer areas and acrylic for any sharper areas.  I then went onto photoshop to test out colours and how they would look.

Quick Tests:
Crows:
For this design I sketched out a simple crow and made it look a bit more fancy, I then scanned it and put it into photoshop. I do like the last one the most as it look "clean" but I'm still struggling with the font and placement of the title. I also like the double line art the second one shows as it feels a bit trippy. I also noticed my overall theme and genre I originally thought about was fading away from my design so I will focus on getting it to match during my next tests.

Portrait:
For further testing I sketched out a simple portrait wit some details that I could place around - I find having separated the sketches to be easier when it comes to colouring the sketch separately. I don't have a set idea for a final pieces so I will continue to mess around with different ideas and see what I get although I am figuring out photoshop and procreate much more than before. For the first test I struggled to get a background colour in so I switched applications and figured out I needed to change the blend mode to multiply which I had forgotten about, this made it much easier to get colour more into my work. I also liked using my own handwriting but I also like the boldness of the font's I used.

Squirell Photograph:
I moved onto using a squirell statue photograph for these next ones. I wanted to try out these affects while trying out a different approach to than just a sketch and trying to make this photograph look analogue. I honestly didn't think I would like it all that well and I did struggle to come up wwith different ideas compared to the other two themes but I think I have managed to create something different. I don't think I will continue with this design as it's not entirely my favourite, but I have noticed myself using one specific font type and I have been leaning towards using it for my final idea.

Portrait 2:

I wanted to try out another human design and play around with adding text into the hair but this didn't really work out well, I was having some difficulties so I overall stopped and just did some other techniques and added different textures. After these tests I will move onto making a final image with what I already have and play around with colours, textures, etc..

Final Design:

For my final I chose my first portrait design as I felt this worked best with what I invisioned, I had a bit of trouble with placing text and the overall composition of the design so I messed around and then came to a conclusion, I wanted the name of the "person" in my title large with the next part slightly smaller but still aligining the same width as the surname. I then added sme screenprint textures as well as folded paper textures to make it feel more old and used. I kept it decently less as to not over do the design and focus more on working with photoshop which I do think i've gotten better at using especially if I want quick designs finished.

ENAMEL PINS

For this Project we are to focus on using Illustrator to create pop culture enamel pin designs as well as focusing on a logo and background design. I think this project will be fun as I've got lots of ideas I want to play around with, the main one being Animal Crossing pin designs as it's gotten pretty well known over lockdown, I was also thinking of some shows such as Over the garden wall but I'm not sure how well known it really is compared to shows such as Adventure Time or Studio Ghibli movies.

Inspiration:
Instead of doing full on research like for the Photoshop project, I have numbed it down to a Pinterest board just to get my ideas down and see how others have also went ahead and created their own versions. I am still highly on board with either choosing Animal Crossing or perhaps Pokemon or Studio Ghibli, I think I will play around with these Ideas on Illustrator and then come to a conclusion of which seems more recognizable for the project.

I found some enamel pins and a necklace that also helped me figure out what they should look like if I was to make these designs look as though they where real. There is no use of shading and having any details within these designs so I wanted my finals to not be as detailed either. You can tell what these designs are by how simple they look which makes them work.

Thursday's Task: "Illustration"

We were given 4 different options to work with while using the basic shapes, I mainly stuck with circles and the rounded rectangle for my paint bucket. I honestly couldn't think of how to make an illustration based off the word otherwise and I found it a bit difficult to figure out what the different tools do. Luckily there are lot's of illustrator videos out there to help as I tend to search a lot of my questions when it has came to Photoshop and other Digital applications. I did however like how neat the layers where pilled, everything was under certain layers and automatically grouped together - it really helps knowing where your shapes should be.
After the session I was told about TADO and how my design looked similar to their's, I had a look at their account and the designs look very adorable! I particularly like the Sanrio (Hello Kitty) characters.

Maple:

I started off going straight into one of the animal crossing characters, however when I went into illustrator I noticed how heavy I was using the reference of her so I did some different angels and change the style a bit more to show my style. I like how the vectors look without the shiny metal/lineart included more or i ended up liking the lineart as it is only. I am still finding Illustrator pretty hard, especially when it comes to deleted lines without deleting too much of it, the mouth was also a struggle as I ended up using 3 different lines for it.

Celeste:

Celeste is a pretty popular and recognisable character, she's also got a really lovely colour pallet which made me want to choose her, to keep the colours at least 4 i decided to make the blush and bow the same colour, So far I have been working on white paper so when I make the backing I will have to go in and fill in the white areas. I'm not sure if I want to keep her eyes completely dark or add some white to it but I think she looks best with full black eyes only. I managed to figure out 2 different ways to remove the lineart where I didn't need it but I did struggle with adding in the colours a little, I don't think it will be a huge issue as I have managed to figure it out somehow.

Melba:

I found this design to be just as hard to capture especially when it comes to the nose and how I'm adding colour to it, I think this one is my least favourite design so far as the colours are far too soft and light and clashed with the yellow/gold outline. I then tried to use a darker yellow to what I originally have been using and I think it makes the design stand out better this way than having to use black. I didn't try out different styles for this character and kept it simple, there's a few more than just 4 colours used in this design so I've tried my best to match the ears with the blush or keep the eyes as black. If I was to go back to this project I think I would change this character for a different one but the challenge was still enjoyable to go through and it made me keep figuring out how illustrator works more.

Backing & Logo:

With the logo I wasn't too sure if it needed to correlate to my choice of design but to play it safe I ended up making a logo based off the new horizons tag, I later on noticed the colour scheme didn't really suit my animals so I went back in to change them - I then started to design my backings which I didn't take much process photos of as it was pretty quick and just arranging it to how I wanted and changing the colours to match the logo. I honestly really love the backings- I went into photoshop to fix most of the design as I wasn't sure how the clipping mask in illustrator worked or adding in a card affect either.

Finals:
Picture
When going through Maple's design I had almost forgot her white pupils and to me the added detail adds more life to the pin, for the lineart I decided to try out the gradient and try to make this appear shiny and metalic and I think it captures it well.
Picture
When working with this design I tried to go for the same metalic gradient but as there's so much line work involved it ended up looking chunky and that it was all done separately so I opted for the yellow outline, giving it a gold-like feel but also making my character stand out.
Picture
I found this one to be not so bad once I figured out how to make it stand out, I needed a more bronze like colour and kept mixing up the colours to see what would work but also still look like my character.
