Drawing

Week 1:
Book/Library Research
John Vernon Lord
Chris Ware
Sarah Simblet
I enjoyed looking through John Vernon Lord's sketches and the way he uses his inks on yellow stained paper. I also like that there was also pops of colours within his line work instead of fully being black and white.
Looking through Chris Wares sketches I was really found of how he uses his paints only in a few sketches, the small amount of vibrancy makes them stand out compared to the others.
These sketches seem a bit more defined than rough quick sketches for the most part but I did enjoy looking through them and seeing how Sarah approaches both perspectives of building and anatomy of the human figure.
Dwayne Bell
Sketching from the Imagination: Dark Arts
Sketching from the Imagination: Creatures & Monsters
I enjoyed looking through Dwayne's sketchbook and seeing how simplistic it can be but also still detailed - overall it was nice seeing a tutors work too and how they approach their work and how they manage to work outside building that confidence.
This book had a variety of different artists and how they sketch but my favourite to look at was Abigail Larson's, I really liked how her sketches turned out and how messy they also look which fit this creepy dark theme that the book had going on.
The creatures and monsters book also has some interesting sketches and line work, although very clean and detailed there's a few I liked that didn't look complete. I also enjoyed looking a the different variety of creatures and how these artists thought to think of them.

I was looking up some urban sketching posts to help visualise - I noticed most of these are taken on sunny and clear days but as we're coming into Autumn it would be lucky to be able to go outside and draw in better conditions. I chose quite a few that use colours as these stood out more but I think I will try my best to work with both ink and colour.

Reflection

Throughout the project I hope to gain more confidence and understanding of being able to draw from observation, I am currently more comfortable with staying inside and being able to stop and go back to my work and keep building on it than just quickly jot down what I see. It will be hard for me to be comfortable drawing in a town where people know who I am and might be curious on what I'm doing, I'll need to work on both my confidence with drawing in public and being able to converse about my work for any curious people walking bye.

With mediums I think I will struggle to try and paint outdoors and use anything other than just a pencil and pens - I think using a watercolour travel set will be more efficient in both portable and the least messier option and will help me get out of my comfort zone with starting off with just a pencil. With observing my surroundings will mostly be buildings which I'm not that great with including placement and perspective, my style will mostly change throughout the project trying to understand where things go and how I'll add dimension and depth.

Urban Sketching

Picture
Week 2
To start off I mainly used a mechanical pencil to sketch the overall structure as the lines are thinner compared to pencils - I took my fineliners and watercolours with me using a brush pen as to not need to carry a jar of water.

When I first began doing these sketches I wasn't sure how I was going to go out and draw so I started off with just my garden and then slowly approaching just my street, by then I wanted to venture further so I decided to get myself to Springfield and draw around there - during my sketch of the church I was interrupted by a wasp, left, came back and so did the wasp... needless to say the wasp won and I moved further on drawing some scenery and buildings  - I think the hardest part was to use watercolour outside as well as figuring out the perspective whilst being cold. I still have a long way till I feel more confident in myself - especially being alone and drawing but I had the most fun drawing carefree and not caring if my work looked perfect. I enjoyed using gouache the most as it makes mthe pages pop out more so I hope to be able to use more of it too.

Wild Life Drawing

Week 3

I found this task more enjoyable than trying to work on how to form buildings, it was still tricky to work on the anatomy and shape without constantly sketching and rubbing out my work but I did enjoy the challenge. Contrary to the movement of the bus I preferred drawing strangers on a moving vehicle than anything - It also helped if I could recognize anyone and wonder if I can time most of them before they get off, the other struggle of trying to draw in a vehicle was the motion sickness and hoping I'll manage to get a few sketches done before I felt sickly... what I gathered from this is that It is slightly more easier to draw people from a bit afar - sadly I didn't manage to get full body drawings done so I will try to focus on trying them afterwards.
After Feedback/Holidays:

After my feedback i was told I should add more colour into my work, so whenever i had the chance I started to draw and paint what i could see, I tried to not spend too much time making these look nice but rather getting the visuals across as to understand what I have drawn.
