An Episode of Cathedral History

The literal illustration project is based on M.R.JAMES'S ghost stories, I was given 'An Episode of Cathedral History'. I read through my story and shortened it down to the text that I wanted to illustrate.

One illustration is a full-page, full bleed image which should be presented as follows: CMYK - image size 160mm wide X 226mm high at a resolution of 300 dpi. Black and white chapter heading that is aligned to the body of the justified text. As such it must occupy an area of 105mm wide X 50mm high. A further front cover (and spine) design for the book 'Collected Ghost Stories of M R James'. The cover will be printed with two spot colours on a cloth binding. The cover will be 165mm wide X 231mm high. The spine will be 30mm wide X 231mm high

For my front cove and spine I wanted it to look like a Penguin Book classic, for this I chose only two colours that would work well together. The overall design is of a creepy tree in which the branches resemble hands that almost entrap the title text. For the spine I wanted my text to still be seen so I kept the designs short but added the tree branches to it to still fit with the cover.

For my main illustartion I wanted to create the reporter heading off to the cathedral as the 'monster' lurks after him. The only use of colour I wanted to use was red, mainly for the monsters eyes but I also added light to the lantern. At first I was wanting to use ink but felt like my origial design was too flat and for time I switched over to digital but used traditional brushes to try and keep the same texture.

My chapter heading was done in pen and ink, I found this fit well with the horror theme. My idea was to take the story in which the the reporters wife did not realise her favourite dress had been torn, I included a creepy hand that would come snatch as she walked.

Overall I enjoyed this project, I especially enjoyed having to create the cover and spine of this book. I found the simple design to work well with the requirements. I think for my main illustartion I struggled more with how I was going to create the light and shadows. If I was to re do this project I would try and create my design in ink like I originally planned
