How The Elephant Got His Trunk

This project is to create a children's book for early readers. I chose the story 'How The Elephant Got It's Trunk' by Rudyard Kipling.

For this project I wanted to try out collaging so I took some scrap paper and made a few textures using acrylics, I also used bits of gouache and oil pastels and edited everything digitally to clean it all up.

For my cover I wanted the front page to have a cut out that would reveal text on the inside, I also added some plants to the inside to make it appear more visible. For the back I wanted the elephant to sit as his trunk wraps around towards the front leading the eye towards the title.

My single page spread featured the elephant learning what he can now do with his long trunk which he couldn't do before. Accompanied by his friend, the frog. My double page spread focuses on the action scene of the script where the crocodile chomps onto the elephants trunk, stretching it out. I planned to have this page open up to where the crocodile let's go, giving elephant a longer trunk. I had fun playing around with the text and creating some eyes inside the 'look'.

I enjoyed having to use collages for this project, It was overall fun but still a lot of work to get everything how I wanted. I am pleased with the finals and how colourful they turned out to be as I wasn't sure what background colour would have fit well with the overall designs.
